The reason that brass tarnishes is because it is mostly made up of copper!  Most items now come from India and have a thin lacquer coating on them.  This coating will easily breakdown and cause the brass to tarnish within months.  Additionally, salt air, every day usage and even hand creams can strip the lacquer off brass leading to tarnishing!

One way to prevent this from happening is to use Silicone Spray (as per picture provided), which will add a layer to protect the lacquer coating – but this is only recommended if it is lacquered , not raw brass!

This spray is also useful for lubricating moveable parts e.g. springs or door hinges and great for protecting and lubricating door furniture and Brass light switches!
